Teaching English project

Teaching English, mathematics and other subjects in Mongolia will inevitably increase employment opportunities, reduce illiteracy and ultimately assist local people to become economically independent. Teaching volunteers will work alongside local teachers to improve participatory teaching methods, classroom management, assessments and gender equality in the classroom.

Volunteers will also help develop primary education projects focusing on early-childhood development, literacy and health education.

As a teaching volunteer, you may teach conversational English, mathematics, geography, science, social studies or supervise homework and provide individualized attention to students falling behind in class. Mongolian students of all ages and backgrounds appreciate the opportunity to interact with fluent English speakers. You do not have to be a qualified or experienced teacher to join the project, and you are sure to receive a warm welcome from the local schools we work with who are eager to have our volunteers. Whether you want to volunteer abroad by teaching during your gap year, career break, or vacation you will have a role to play, and your efforts will make a lasting impact.

The teaching placement is in kindergarten, lower grades and primary schools in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Volunteers with personal experience in special education can also bring their skills and initiatives to bear as they help create lesson plans and activities for their unique lessons. You will as well gain hands-on experience and have lots of fun working in this project.

Your valuable role as a teaching volunteer will make a significant impact on the lives of children in local schools with limited resources, help build their confidence and individual potential outside the classroom. Volunteers will receive support from the New Choice staff and the local school teachers regarding the lesson plans and teaching curriculum. All of our placement schools welcome volunteers who express interest in other aspects of school activities like sports, drama, arts and music.

As a volunteer on this project, you will work from Monday to Friday for 5-6 hours in a day, with weekends off so you can explore your new community, visit some beautiful Mongolian attractions and explore nearby areas. You are welcome to bring along teaching materials such as picture books, instruments, flash cards, art supplies, and songs. Classes are generally in session five days a week.

Orphanage & Childcare Project

Children are every community's hope for a better future. Caring for at-risk infants and children who are abandoned or otherwise, resource limited can have a lasting impact on a child's well-being and is one of New Choice's most rewarding placements available for volunteers. Prepare kids for a bright future by playing games, serving meals, and giving much-needed one-on-one attention and love. The care placement is ideal for volunteers interested in working with children, caring for their needs and welfare.

During school terms, the majority of children at the orphanage attend school during the day and with that in mind, we combine teaching and care wherein volunteers can work at the orphanage school in the morning, then offer care and needed support, mentor or play games with the children at the orphanage in the afternoon. This will make a greater impact on each child's life by teaching them at school and giving them your individual attention, love and care in and outside of the classroom. You should come prepared with ideas for activities suitable for children of different ages – think of your favorite playground games, nursery rhymes, stories, arts and crafts sessions!

The volunteer care work in Mongolia is an ideal way to get involved and help improve the welfare of vulnerable children. You can contribute toward this important development work during a gap year or career break, or as a meaningful way to spend your vacation. Whether you have a background in childcare, social work or simply enjoy caring for children, a smile or a hug can make a real impact in the life to a child with an aching heart. Working with children can be fun and a rewarding experience that anyone interested in children’s issues can join. The only quality required of a volunteer is to have compassion, patience and desire to work with children.

As a volunteer on this project, your day schedule normally starts at 9:00am and finish around 5:00pm with lots of breaks as it gets exhausting keeping up with the children. You will work from Monday to Friday, with weekends off so you can explore your new community visit some beautiful Mongolian attractions and explore nearby areas.
